Thirteen Reasons Why - A Review
Back with a review this time on the recent netflix mystery web series
Thirteen reasons why! but I m going to review the book by Jay
Asher and not the series adapted. So for a small insight into the book, for
people who haven'tread it yet-
Clay Jensen is a high school student who finds a mysterious shoe-box in
the mail. It contains seven double sided cassette tapes used by Hannah Baker, a
classmate who committed suicide. Each tape describes the reason why she killed
herself, The tapes were sent to many others before arriving at his doorstep and
while listening to them, he walks around the town and visits the various places
mentioned by Hannah.
The book contains two narratives at a time, one from Hannah-voice from
the tapes while the other from Clay, who experiences her sorrowful journey. To
be frank, I liked the book but there were certain negatives which could not be
ignored. What the author wants to convey is very clear and evident-
Our words and actions have a deep impact on someone's life(good/bad)
So choose them carefully! Though it's a work of fiction, you expect a
tint of reality, if not, commonsense! You are a teenager suffering through a
bunch of problems, which are extremely sorrowful and depressing but you decide
against expressing it to your parents! okay! Even if you don't( a sort of
trend nowadays) a little 'more' info about her parents or the impact of her death couldn't have hurt anyone.
Sending out audiotapes to people blaming them for your death has given
the book an amazing story-line but the thought of it so bizarre. The last but a
very crucial point" never think about giving this book to
an-already-not-so-happy-with-life person." You might realize that this
book kinda glamorizes suicide. I was not happy with the fact that there was
never a talk about 'hope' throughout. I would have loved at-least a small
paragraph at the end as an epilogue with a set of impactful words about
HOPE IN LIFE.
All negatives apart, the book is a quick read and has an immediate
affect. It has an excellent well-woven plot showcasing the journey of Hannah
and its thunderous impact on Clay. The point the author wants to convey is
beautifully explored through it's gripping and intense story-line. The story
also brings out major issues like bullying at schools and its adverse affect on
the victim
You must be thinking why am I discussing a book written about a decade
ago. Well read it just a few days back after much hype about its web-series and
thought that the book had its own hits and misses
Once again, just my pov!
How about a review on the book " Geeta... "
